The Community Development Fund of the Ministry of Community Development, Trinidad & Tobago has awarded $4 million dollars in 2011 to various non-governmental organizations (NGO) in their efforts to address poverty at the community level.

 

The CDF Programme objectives are to assist in the delivery of community social services and infrastructure, to low income and disadvantaged sections of the population using non-governmental (NGOs) to strengthen and build the capacity of NGOs and other civil society organizations. The CDF is committed to supporting these organizations as they undertake poverty reduction interventions at the community level and strive to increase beneficiary participation in poverty alleviation initiatives.

 

The organizations benefiting from these grants represent communities in Trinidad and Tobago afflicted with a high level of poverty, or that are rural or in some way, disadvantaged. The initiatives forwarded by the CDF, seek to improve the lives of the populace, thereby promoting a better quality of life, not for specific individuals but for the community as a whole. Over the years CDF grants have been awarded to groups and communities involved in community skill development, community-based income generation activity, and community-based agricultural projects. This year's awardees include Cashew Gardens Community Council (Chaguanas), Parlatuvier Village Council (Tobago), Bethel Interest Group (Tobago), Missions International (Diego Martin), Sea Lots Action Committee (Port of Spain).
